"Postponed to Spring or 2026-27 season- New date TBA-Understanding Hyperfocal Distance & Depth of Field"
by Phil Atiyeh-CT
Monday, November 3, 0:00 PMWe’ve all been there before – a beautiful vista, a magnificent sunset, a breathtaking landscape – and we’re trying to get all the foreground and distant objects in focus. But it’s a struggle. If I make the background crisp, the foreground is soft. And in reverse, it’s the same thing. So I pick a spot a third of the way into the scene. Nope, I just can’t get everything sharp.
If this sounds familiar, then you’re ready to learn about hyperfocal distance and depth of field. A little apprehensive about trying to learn ‘technical stuff’- Not to worry, this presentation is geared for simplicity while also exploring charts and apps that can help expand your knowledge on the subject. Our speaker’s past life in helping companies develop and launch new products has offered a natural path into photography where similar technical and aesthetic elements must work together. While he’s always had an interest in photography, it wasn’t until he left the workforce in 2019 and joined the ‘playforce’, that he accelerated and expanded his photography with greater passion.
He has received over 100 awards in his five years with the New Haven Camera Club as well as merit awards from various photographic associations and he has conducted numerous presentations for camera clubs and conferences. His work has been displayed at the Small Stones Festival of the Arts in Grafton, MA, the Milford Arts Council in CT and Spectrum Art Gallery in Centerbrook, CT. His Judges Choice image of five inquisitive alpacas was awarded the cover photo of the Alpaca Owners Guide - yes, believe it or not, there’s a magazine for this.Whether he’s designing and crafting wood products, playing the drums with other musicians or capturing and processing images from his camera – it’s simply about the drive to create. And photography for Phil has become an incredibly powerful medium for exploiting this passion.
