MAY / JUNE / JULY 2009

Mon. 5/4 - Print Annual Competition with Skip Hoyt, MNEC
Projected Images Due
The GLPA competition season winds down with the annual competitions for prints and dual projection. The standings in both formats have been close in these last few months. Now the time has come to see which competitors can take home the best of the best awards.
Any print that has won Print of the Month, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place in this season’s monthly competitions is eligible for the Print Annual. In addition, you may enter only two of your prints that earned an Honorable Mention.
A panel of three judges will score each entry from 1–5 points for a total of 3–15 points. The judging will be without comments. For 2009 we will again be presenting an overall “Image of the Year” Award. All Print-of-the-Year and Dual Projection Image-of-the-Year winners will be presented to our panel of three judges on May 11 after the Dual Projection Competition. The judges will then pick the Overall Image of the Year from seven individual winners.
Certificates suitable for framing will be given for honorable mentions through second place in the Dual
Projection and Print of the Year Competitions in May. The top winner will receive a Greater Lynn Medal on an engraved plaque. The winner of the Overall Image of the Year award will receive a commemorative plaque and paid dues for the 2009–2010 club season.
The awards for first place in the annual competitions and the Overall Image of the Year plaque will be presented at the Awards Banquet, along with the medals to the top photographers for this season in each class. We hope to print the images of these top winners in the June issue of the Filter, so we will be holding on to your winning prints/images for a short time.

Wed. 5/6 - Digital Interclub Competition hosted at Merrimack Valley Camera Club
Merrimack Valley Camera Club has changed the date of the Digital Interclub Competition from Friday, May 1, 2009, to Wednesday, May 6, 2009. The event will be held at their meeting location in North Andover. Please see their Web site (http://www.mvcameraclub.org) for directions.

Thurs. 5/7 - Print Group Workshop with Len Tremblay
The Print Workshop Group is an informal but very informative group of print makers. All levels of print
makers, from novice to pro, using digital or wet darkrooms, are welcome. The purpose is to help us all become better printmakers. Some of the topics we will discuss are composition, matting, different paper choices and more. We also have a very informal discussion of prints that you are working on, to help you in competition or for display. Please feel free to bring up to five prints, sized 4 x 6 or larger, to share with
the group.

Sat. 5/9 - Field Trip to Beacon Hill with Cheryl Vossmer
We’ll be heading to Beacon Hill on Saturday, May 9. The spring flowers should be in beautiful blossoms, the magnolia trees should be adorning Commonwealth Ave., and daffodils and tulips will fill the beds at the Boston Public Gardens. We’ll meet early morning at the corner of Charles and Beacon Streets— 7:30 A.M. to be exact. Wear very comfortable walking shoes as this will be a long day of walking around the city. Parking meters will be enforced, so either park in a garage, or park outside of the city and take public transportation into Boston.
We will traverse the cobblestone streets of Acorn Street, Louisburg Square, and see the gas street lanterns on Mount Vernon Street and the gold dome of the State House. We’ll head down Beacon Street to visit the Public Garden and its Make Way for Ducklings bronze sculptures and cross over to

Commonwealth Ave. to see more magnolias and the many statues that line the walking mall. Not to be forgotten in this journey will be the candid shots of the people who take their morning stroll, lovers who
enjoy a cup of coffee on a park bench, dog walkers, and of course the numerous joggers. If there is interest we can take a boat ride on the famous swan boats in the Public Garden!
So, bring money for parking, lunch, swan boat rides, and who knows what else. We will end the day with lunch at a location to be determined based on where we are. The severe rain date will be Sunday, May 10 (Mother’s Day).

Mon. 5/11 - Dual Projection Annual Competition with Susan and Jake Mosser, PFSAs, HonNECs; Pam Stanley, MNEC
Eligible images are all images that have won Image of the Month, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place, plus any Honorable Mention winners (two per person max) from the past six competitions. With your April competition slides, you should have received a small piece of paper that notifies you which slides are eligible. For digital, Pam has your winning digital images and will put them in for you. HOWEVER, since only two HMs per person are allowed, if you have won more than two honorable mentions throughout the year, you need to e-mail her and tell her which two you wish to submit for the annual competition. Pam will need time to gather the images so please e-mail her at glpadigitalcomp@verizon.net with this
information before Monday, May 7. If you alternated between slides and digital, the same rules for HMs apply— you can only have two from all of your HMs, and you will need to choose which two. If you choose to enter any of your digital HMs, you need to let Pam know. Obviously, if you choose to enter HMs that are slides, you will give them to Susan. Slides are due on or before May 4.

Sun. 5/17 10:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. - Model/Print Day with Jim Gallagher, MNEC and Skip Hoyt, MNEC
The last of this season’s GLPA model/portrait workshops will be held on Sunday, May 17. The activity
starts at 10:00 A.M. and runs to 3:00 P.M. The lighting source is studio-type strobes. To take advantage of this lighting, you need to be able to plug a PC cord into your camera so the lights are tripped when the shutter button is pressed. If your camera does not have a place to plug in this cord, you’ll need an adapter that fits in your hot shoe. The adapter has the receptacle for the cord. If you are not sure you need this adapter or are confused as to what to buy, bring your camera to club prior to the Model/Portrait Day and someone can take a look at it for you.
The model/portrait day is open to all Greater Lynn members as well as photographers from other New
England camera clubs to the shoots. Please remember, a fee of $10.00 will be required for Greater Lynn members and $15.00 for invited guests. Also, we do not serve coffee or lunch so please take care of your own food needs. There are sub shops in the nearby vicinity.

Mon. 5/18 - Botanical Nature Photography with Jacob Mosser lll, FPSA, HonNEC
From the nature photographer’s perspective, botany subjects are by far the most prolific and accessible of subjects. No doubt fur and feathers have the strongest appeal, but when circumstances limit your subject matter, look to make images from within the background fabric of nature. This presentation looks at what botany subjects are from the “nature” photographer’s perspective as well as
techniques, lighting, locations, philosophies, and equipment (both commercial and home made).

The presentation concludes with a small selection of subjects set to music including an original composition by our own multi-talented Lori Tremblay. Images from backyard to farther afield are included. At the extremes are flowers on sunbaked desert sands and windshaped evergreens in the white glaze of the arctic tundra. This presentation is intended to aid and encourage you to create your own botany collection.
A very active member of the Greater Lynn Photographic Association, Jake Mosser is a serious
amateur and semi-professional who has been obsessed with photography for the past thirty years. He has earned top photographic honors from the Photographic Society of America, the New England Camera Club Council, and our own club for both his skills with the camera and on behalf of the photographic community. A multi-star exhibitor, he has achieved a PSA Star rating of Nature Photo Naturalist 2 and a Galaxy 4 in color. He is past chairman of PSA’s Nature Division, a member of the Massachusetts
Camera Naturalists (CamNats)—a by invitation only nature organization dedicated to the art and teaching
of nature photography, and president of the NECCC Board. Jake is most at home in the field with camera in hand, but he finds a great satisfaction in teaching others the techniques and vision he has learned through experience and the kindness of other sharing photographers.

Wed. 5/20 - Digital Discussion Group with Amy Musinsky, MNEC
The Digital Group will meet on Wednesday, May 20, at 7:30 P.M.  We will continue to demonstrate
techniques to assist attendees in adjusting their images. We will talk about the change between CS3 and CS4. At the April meeting, we discussed the use of the adjustment brush in Lightroom. Over the year we have spent time discussing blending modes and layer masks. We will continue to help people adjust their images while we explore those new techniques in Photoshop and Lightroom. Join us at this next discussion night.

Mon. 5/25 - Memorial Day - no meeting

Mon. 6/1, 6:00 P.M. - Annual Awards And End of Season Banquet
You’ve competed all year with your prints, slides, and digital images. Now it’s time to be recognized for all your effort. On Monday, June 1, the chairs in the Print and Dual Projected Image divisions will be passing out awards to all the top makers for all their prize-winning images of the past season. But the evening is not just for the winners. Those who didn’t get an award need to join the celebration. The
Annual Awards Banquet is for ALL GLPA members and their families. It’s a night of good food, camaraderie, goodnatured banter, and, as always, a few laughs.
Happy Hour is 6:00–7:00 P.M. Dinner is at 7:00 P.M. The presentation of awards will start after dinner. Set aside the date and make your reservations with Dave Parsons at the club, by mail, or e-mail. Deadline for reservations is May 22. Make checks payable to GLPA. Make your dinner selection from the choices Prime Rib $25 or Baked Stuffed Shrimp $23 or Boneless Breast of Chicken $19.

Sat. 6/6, 9:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M. - Yard Sale
GLPA will hold a yard sale to raise funds for the paving fund. The date is Saturday, June 6, 9 A.M.–3 P.M. Rain date will be Saturday, June 27. The GLPA parking lot will be divided into 8-foot spaces. You (or any of your family and friends) may rent a space. Any profit you make at your table is yours to keep. Dave Parsons will be cooking hamburgers and hot dogs to sell to workers and customers.
Please spread the word to your family and friends about this event. Space rentals are open to anyone who wants to participate, not just GLPA members. Here's your chance to do some spring cleaning and get rid of those items that you don't want but somebody else might find a great bargain. If you feel you don't have enough to sell to warrant the rental expense, get together with a friend and share the cost. Remember, the proceeds of your sales are yours to keep.
Cost to rent a space is $25 and you provide your own table. If you'd like to use one of the GLPA tables, the rental for the space and table is $35.
Space is still available. Please make your reservation with Barbara bye-mail (barb.photo@comcast.net)
as soon as possible. Those of you who have already reserved a space/table but not yet paid may bring your check on the day of the sale. Make your check payable to GLPA. Set up is at 8 A.M. The sale will run from 9 A.M. to 3 P.M. Any vehicles need to out of the church parking lot before 4 P.M. We ask your cooperation with that.

Mon. 6/8, 7:00 P.M. - Field Trip to Annisquam Lighthouse
We will meet at 7 P.M. at the North Beverly Plaza behind the bank to the right as you enter. The North Beverly Plaza is at the junction of routes 128 and 1A, Exit 20. We will carpool from there as parking
is limited at the light itself. Rain date will be announced if necessary.
If you want to go directly to the lighthouse, here are the
directions:
Follow Route 128 to the circle at Gloucester. Go ¾ around and head toward Annisquam on Route 127. After a couple of miles, you will come to a white church on the left and the sign for the village of Annisquam. Turn down here and go a short distance to see a sign for Norwood Heightsprivate
on the right. You can take this road to the lighthouse, but there are only two parking places there.
Instead, continue on a short distance, bearing right. There is a metal barrier with a few places to park on the right. This is the entrance to the park that leads down to the beach in front of the lighthouse. Good pictures can be taken all along this path and out onto the rocks. If people are photographing from the rocks, try not to get in front of them. Sunset is at 8:15 P.M. Photograph both before and after the sun sets.
We will decide on what to do for a post sunset snack after gathering at the lighthouse. Be sure to bring bug repellent, as it is black fly time, and a flashlight.

Sat. 6/13, 8:00 A.M. - Spring Cleanup Day (Rain Date Sunday, June 14, 9:00 A.M.)
We have a small group of projects that need our attention this year. The grass and weeds in the parking lot
need to be cut and brought to the Lynn compost area. The handicapped ramp needs to be resealed before next
winter. Also on the list is replacing the lovely 2 × 4 railings on the front porch with actual pressure–treated deck materials and then paint or stain them.
There is a dedicated crew who shows up for this event every year. Please consider spending a few hours at the
club helping us out. We’re usually done by 12 noon. You’ll need to bring clippers, weed whackers, brooms, rakes, and shovels. You’ll need to wear yard work and painting clothes. We’ll have the yard bags, coffee, and bagels.
The results of our labors are very obvious and make a real difference to the usability, maintenance, and the longterm investment of the club building. The reason we’re able to use the building as much as we do is a direct result of keeping it maintained, safe, and updated. We pay to have the hard stuff done, but we try to do the easy stuffourselves. Hope to see you there. Any questions about this event, please e-mail me.
